iGSI performs and leverages research activities on new information and communication technologies and takes the research outcomes to customers. iGSI directly contributes to the research community and augments the experiences and knowledge of their business partners and the information society.
iGSI performs research and leverages results on IT architectures in various sectors such as enterprise systems, emergency management systems, global climate change detection and analysis systems, vector-borne disease analysis and forecast systems, fire information systems, security, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems.
iGSI works on the development, integration and deployment strategies on numerous architectural frameworks to advance Enterprise Interoperability.
iGSI performs data fusion research primarily in the context of the Sensor Web and the Semantic Sensor Web. The Sensor Web represents an infrastructure that allows multi sensor data fusion. This process is highly complex and includes the aspects information aging, i.e. the homogenization of incoming data sets and their extrapolation to specific points in time, information weighting of individual sensors or sensor readings, and information interpretation. The latter usually requires the transformation of unstructured, initially incommensurable data structures and information models into a structured representation.

Increased situational awareness is a key factor for the success of todays business. iGSI conducts research and provides services in the field of geospatial Event Processing and Event Architectures to improve the timeliness, relevance, accuracy and completeness of mission critical information.
iGSI is a member of the key architects team of the OGC Sensor Web Enablement team from on the beginning. The OGC Sensor Web Enablement suite of standards specifies interoperability interfaces and metadata encodings that enable real time integration of heterogeneous sensors and sensor webs into a common information infrastructure. The standards are sensor and platform generic, i.e. each type of sensing device, active component, or sensor device platform is supported. iGSI is involved in the development of all released service and encoding specifications.
